If you move home you need to tell us as soon as possible so that we can make sure that your council tax is correct

If you move and stay in Warrington, you must continue to pay your council tax instalments while we process your change of address.

Tell us about your move online

Moving into a home if you’re a first time council tax payer

You’ve moved into a property and you didn’t previously pay council tax – for example, if you’ve moved out of your parents’ house into a property of your own:

You’ll need to tell us:

  • your name, and the names of anyone else who will be listed on the bill
  • your new address

If you have bought the property:

  • the date the sale completed
  • the name and new address of the previous owner, if you know

If you are renting the property:

  • the date your tenancy started
  • the name and address of the landlord or letting agent

Once you receive your first bill, you’ll need to decide how you want to pay

If your account is in credit or in arrears after you move

If you move and there is a credit or arrears on your account we will:

  1. close the account
  2. write to everyone listed on the bill to explain what will happen next
  3. ask you to pay any outstanding amount
  4. or ask how you would like us to process the refund

Other things to think about when you move

If you move home or someone moves in and out of your property don’t forget that you may also need to report this to our benefits team if you claim housing benefit or council tax benefit.

You will also need to update the electoral register.

The Which? website has a handy moving house checklist.

If you have a Garden Waste subscription you will need to report your move through your MyWarrington account
