Checking your electoral registration details is an important task for all households each year, so that they are able to vote in elections and have their say on decisions that affect them.

The annual canvass allows the council to keep the electoral register up to date, to identify who might risk losing their voice at elections, and to encourage people to register before it’s too late. It is also an ideal time for households to provide updated details if there have been any changes. It is important that anyone over the age of 16 is included on your household registration.

The canvass in Warrington will begin from the end of July, with letters being delivered to all households with instructions on how to confirm their details.

Warrington Borough Council’s Chief Executive and Returning Officer for elections, Professor Steven Broomhead MBE, said: “The annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate. To make sure you don’t lose your say at the next election, look out for instructions from us.

“If you haven’t yet registered, the easiest way to do so is online at gov.uk/register-to-vote.”

Moved house recently?

Recent home movers in particular are urged to check their details. Electoral Commission research has found that recent home movers are less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time.

In Great Britain, 9 out of 10 people who have lived in their home for longer than 16 years will be registered, compared with just 36% of people who have lived at an address for less than a year.
