Opened on 15 April 1964, Walton Lea Crematorium is nestled within the walls of Lord Daresbury’s old estate, today it is a truly tranquil and serene place to lay a loved one to rest.

You can spot ducks and moorhens near the old ornamental pond, hear woodpeckers in the meadows and see buzzards soaring overhead. Walk along the grass path around the summer meadow to see the ‘rabbit hill’ which is known for its abundant wildlife, or find a bench in the memorial garden and take in the colourful insects and birds, including dragonflies and wrens.

There are plenty of seats offering lovely, quiet places of contemplation, or to just sit and take in the grounds and the views beyond. The crematorium grounds also hold a Green Flag award.

Open when the building is staffed 9am - 4.45pm on weekdays and weekend mornings 9am - 1pm.

Crematorium Grounds

If you are visiting with your dog it must be kept on a lead at all times.

Summer - 1 April to 30 September

  • Weekends and Bank Holiday 9am - 5pm

Winter - 1 October to 31 March

  • Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm
  • Weekends and Bank Holiday 9am - 4pm

Flowers and tributes

You are welcome to place flowers on the grass in the Garden of Remembrance and scattering areas. To help us carefully and safely maintain the grounds, and to be considerate of all visitors, please:

  • only place cut flowers (without any wrappings)
  • don’t place items on, or attached to, any trees
  • don’t plant anything, or disturb the ground in any way
  • don’t place items in the scattering areas – this includes pots, glass, metal and ceramic tributes

We may remove items which are not permitted.

You may leave cards for specific occasions such as birthdays, mother’s days, father’s days and Christmas, but we’ll collect these during routine maintenance of the grounds.

You can place Christmas wreaths within the flower shelter area, and we’ll collect these after the new year.

Please note that no other items/pots/flowers may be placed on or around the memorial vases, sanctums or the memorial wall with the plaques on, or near the garden block vases, or the memorial benches.

We would appreciate your support with the removal of permanent items from strewing areas. These are natural areas, no permanent memorials, flower tubes etc are permitted. In the event you are unable to do so, Bereavement Services will remove items on your behalf.

An area is provided at the main carpark for the placement of flowers.

Donations

Family and friends often ask us if they can donate to the crematorium or the grounds. If you’d like to contribute please contact us, any amount is gratefully received. We use the money to develop and improve the grounds and the facilities.
