The UK Government has recently released its 'Simpler Recycling' reforms, with the aim of reshaping the way we recycle to improve recycling rates, but what does this mean for your business?

As the name suggests, the new rules aim to make things simpler, easier and more consistent across the UK, increasing recycling rates which have stagnated in recent years. Whilst these reforms aim to standardise and enhance recycling and waste collection for both households and businesses (by making them simpler) we know for many, they can seem like anything but.

When do the changes happen?

31 March 2025

All business over 10 employees must have a recycling service in place by 31 March 2025 under the new legislation.

31 March 2027

Micro firms (less than 10) have until the 31 March 2027 to comply.

What are the main changes for businesses?

Dry mixed recyclables must be separated from residual waste. Paper, card, rigid plastics, cartons, glass, and metals, will all be included in this stream.

Why are the changes being introduced?

To improve recycling rates

The government aims to achieve 65% recycling by 2035.

Simplify waste management

Make sure the same materials can be recycled everywhere, by allowing people to recycle the same set of core materials wherever they are.

Easier compliance

Straightforward recycling guidelines make it easier for businesses to comply with legal disposal and recycling practices. This reduces the likelihood of illegal dumping and other forms of waste crime.

How will the reforms affect my business?

Businesses will need to arrange for a separate mixed recycling and food waste collection, glass, metal, plastic, paper, and cardboard can be collected as co-mingled. These arrangements must be place by 31st March 2025.

What does this mean for our customers?

As a business, you will have to adhere to these changes to meet government legislation.

Mixed Recycling

Cartons will now be included in the Mixed Recycling stream. This means our customers will need to adjust their recycling practices to recycle cartons and mixed recycling correctly.
