Concerned about increase in traffic in south Warrington. This revised plan does nothing to address the existing severe traffic congestion at the Lumb Brook/Grappenhall Road/Chester Road traffic lights between 8 and 9.15 a.m./2.45 to 3.30 p.m. and then from 4.15 to after 6 p.m. on weekdays. The problem is an old one: the single-lane tunnel under the Bridgewater Canal. It is the elephant in the room. I see no data in the plan on existing traffic flow at rush hour and school finishing times at this crucial and vulnerable pinch point in Warrington's road network. An extra 2,400 houses in the Grappenhall Heys area (the 'South East Urban Extension') means in effect, with an average of two cars per household, 4,800 extra cars forced down this bottleneck daily. Only seven or eight cars can pass through the typical green light sequence, one way, at one time. I can only describe the lack of consideration of this fundamental transport black spot in the plan as professional negligence. It is a recipe for commuting and quality of life disaster and voter disenchantment. Lumb Brook/Bridge Lane is a route to two schools, one a primary the other the high school. The school-run periods are a nightmare. Cars are backed up halfway up or down Bridge Lane depending on whether it is drop off or pick up. The queues from the Longwood Rd junction leading down to Lumb Brook at evening rush hour can take 30 minutes to go through the single lane access under the Bridgewater Canal. The residents of Bridge Lane and the Cobbs estate are effectively denied the road by the non-resident traffic. That is now! What can we expect with nearly 5,000 more cars daily? I have not even addressed the implications of air-quality for those living in the Cobbs housing estate.
