A special cricket afternoon

A special cricket match is to be played on the Town Hall lawn this Saturday 29 September.

While they now play at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester, Lancashire Cricket Club played their first ever match in Warrington 160 years ago at Bank Park, Warrington.

People will be able to soak up the atmosphere and excitement, with a full day of activities, organised by the Friends of Warrington Town Hall, Cheshire Cricket Board, the council and Lancashire Cricket Club.

Activities for the special heritage event – which runs from 12noon until 4pm - include:

  • Under 9's cricket tournament with Cheshire Cricket Board and Livewire
  • Commemorative exhibition cricket match in action from 2.30pm on the front lawn
  • Cricket activities including batting and bowling masterclasses delivered by Lancashire Cricket Club and LiveWire.
  • An exhibition within the Town Hall provided by Lancashire County Cricket Club
  • Stalls provided by St Elphin’s Craft Group, Fair Trade Organsiation, Public Health, Constabulary Community Engagement team to name a few.
  • Afternoon tea - served in two sittings in the Town Hall from 12pm to 1pm and again from 3pm to 4pm. Expect hand-made scones, finger sandwiches, cakes and dainties. A guided tour of the Town Hall is included.

Warrington Cricket Club’s Bank Hall ground was chosen to host the inaugural game of Lancashire Cricket Club - which took place on 15-16 June 1864  - due to the town’s central location. The oldest cricket club in Cheshire, Birkenhead Park, who had previously played against the MCC at Lords and Surrey at the Oval, joined forces with the Gentlemen of Cheshire to oppose Lancashire in the match.

The game ended in a draw with Lancashire scoring 169 and 78 in their two innings, while their opponents scored 143 in their first innings and were on the verge of victory being just 15 runs short of their target when play drew to a close.
