About us

As a result of an internal promotion we have a new opportunity to join our highly-regarded internal audit team to help us deliver a varied and challenging programme of assurance work.

We provide assurance, which means that we critically appraise business activities designed to help the council manage its risks and therefore meet its objectives. We offer advice, working with managers to co-design business solutions to improve those activities when they aren’t working as well as they should. We also help to ensure that people in our organisations use public money effectively and for the good of our communities

The role

In joining the team, you will be responsible for the delivery of assignments using a risk-based audit approach across the full range of council services. You will work closely with managers to establish potential risks and their corresponding control mechanisms; evaluate your findings and report the outcomes to the client.

You will gain experience across a wide variety of public services and internal support activities. We also carry out audit and grant certification work for schools and external clients, including Multi-Academy Trusts, so no two days are ever the same.

We value diversity of thought and the strength that a mix of different backgrounds, transferable skills, qualifications, and experience can bring to our team and problem solving. We recognise that our success is all about our people and their talent.

You will work with experienced colleagues who will support you with your personal development and you will receive on the job training, with the opportunity to obtain further formal qualifications under the Apprentice Levy scheme.

We work from the best place to complete the task in hand, which will mean you work in a hybrid way, including from our central office at One Time Square, Warrington, or from home and/or at specific locations across Warrington.  The audit service is delivered as part of a joint working arrangement with Salford City Council and there may be the opportunity for you to carry out work at Salford to assist your personal and professional development.

We operate flexi time and will be happy to consider working patterns that support your personal circumstances (for example term time only hours), subject to the requirements of the job.

What's needed?

For the role:

· Ideally you will be (or working towards being) IIA or AAT qualified (NVQ level 4 or above), a part-qualified accountant, or hold an equivalent relevant qualification. For exceptional candidates, we will provide support towards a Level 4 qualification.

· Internal audit experience or similar is desirable, but not essential, as is experience working in the public sector.

· With responsibility for your own portfolio, under supervision, you will have experience of delivering work to professional and quality standards within budgeted deadlines.
